I needed to post about this because it is facinating, disgusting and amazing all at the same time! These beautiful and strange caterpillars are called white-striped moth caterpillars.
I was sitting in the nursery after church and my husband came in and asked our daughter Abby if she wanted to go see the caterpillar. She, of course, went with excitment. After a few minutes I was wondering were she was, she needed to come clean up her mess, so I went out to find her. I aske our assistant pastor where she might be and he said "out back looking at the caterpillars."
I went out back and without noticing anything, I called for Abby. "Mrs. Esther, look"! I looked around and to my suprise there were caterpillars EVERYTWHERE!!! They were crawling up the sides of the church, across the black top, by my feet! I freaked out and ran inside. Now typically I like caterpillars. Even as a little girl I would pick them up and let them crawl on my hand, but there were way to many of them for my comfort. I went back out to look at them, carefully watching were I stepped. I was amazed at how many were out there. They would climb up the side of the walls and then lose thier grip and fall to thier death.
After I got home I was intrigued and wanted to know what kind they were and why there were so many. I found this article in the Las Cruces Newspaper.
